The Holistic Review Process
Selective colleges use "holistic review" to evaluate applicants as whole people, not just collections of stats. Here's what matters most.
Academic Achievement (Most Important)
- GPA in context: Your grades relative to your school's offerings
- Course rigor: Did you challenge yourself with APs, Honors, IB?
- Grade trends: Improvement over time can help
- Test scores: Important but increasingly optional
Personal Qualities
- Intellectual curiosity: Do you learn for its own sake?
- Character: Integrity, resilience, empathy
- Leadership: Initiative and influence
- Diversity: Unique perspectives and experiences
Extracurricular Activities
Quality over quantity. Depth of involvement matters more than number of activities.
Essays
Your chance to show who you are beyond numbers. Authenticity and reflection are key.
Recommendations
What do teachers and counselors say about you? Their perspectives on your intellectual engagement and character matter.
The "Fit" Factor
Colleges want students who will thrive on their campus AND contribute to their community. It's a two-way match.
